Hi there, folks! Welcome to APAGear II, Volume 1, Number 10.
Welcome to the Future.
That's how Janne Kemppi signs off with most of his Colonial Expeditionary Forces (CEF) articles, and if you take a quick look at this issue--or even a nice, long, lingering look--you'll notice something astonishing: Janne's presenting an RPG scenario this month. But it's not just a few notes on an idea he once had; no, no, it's much much more than that.
Janne's presenting you with the CEF scenario he ran at Finland's RoPeCon99 this year, and you get all the handouts and detailed information you could want in order to run a "basic training" game. But it's not just a "basic training" scenario--it's also a clever introduction to the Silhouette system for new players, as well as a lot of solid, military role playing action. Check it out with all haste; there's a hell of a lot packed into The Selection.
One thing you'll immediately notice is that most of it is presented as Adobe Acrobat PDF files. There's a good reason for it: Converting to HTML wouldn't have done this scenario justice. It's meant to be printed out and used, not just read online. There are a number of forms included that the players get to fill out as their characters work their way through the process of joining the CEF, and there are forms for the GM to fill out to chart the characters' progress through basic training. HTML isn't the right medium for such forms and charts.
If you're opposed to PDFs, then you'll be missing out on monumental masterwork, folks.
