HG Votoms is my tribute to AT Votoms maybe one of best (and most popular in japan) mecha animes in existance. This project consists of adapting part storyline, characters and equipment into Heavy Gear. It has been one of my pet projects for some time. Each part of this project will include information what this thing did in original series and a conversion. It is amazing how well AT Votoms technology tranlates into heavy gear, making this conversion quite easy. Information that was used in this conversion came mostly by watching the series, reading the AT Votoms RPG by R.Talsorian games and of course scavenging the net for illustrations and additional information. Have fun.
It could be said that ATM-09-ST Scopedog is the (HACS-01-MP-MG) Hunter gear of the AT Votoms. The first gear that sets a performance standard to all the successive designs, and like Hunter there are lots of variants about it. It is amazing how well AT Votoms technology tranlates into heavy gear, making this conversion quite easy.
In heavy gear Scopedog could be used like any other gear in historical Heavy Gear campaign, set around time of early days of AST. Or as an outdated antique oddity in modern Heavy Gear campaign.
THe ATM-09 Scopedog was first introduced in TN1681. Two scant seasons after Southern war and formation of the Allied Southern territories. The Dog series gears were first mass produced non-Hunter derived gears.
Although they were inferior to the southern Jägers in terms of ground speed and armaments, but unequalled at the time on secondary movement system speed. They had advantage of cheap price and numerous disadvantages, but at time the new AV-1 Jäger was restricted to Southern Republic Army, and the AST vassal and MILICIA states scampered for anything that resembled a heavy gear.
When the first Scopedog rolled out from Skavara Heavy Industries production line in TN1683 it became an instant hit, among the AST MILICIA and Emirs of ESE, also it's rumored that even isolationistic Humanist alliance bought small number of these units.
It was hailed as "future of warfare" by cost conscious planners and called "walking coffin" by disgruntled pilots. Flaws in it's design became quickly evident. Lack of antipersonel weapons rendered it a somewhat vulnerable to the heavy weapons. And on top of that early hydraulic fluid that was flammable (comparable diesel oil).
The ATM-09-ST Scopedog quickly spawned a host variant and refit kits, ranging from additional anti-personel arms, to full scale desert and swamp refits. Production and improvement of dog series continued to the TN1798, when Skavara Heavy Industries acquired a licence for building Basilisk from Territorial Arms. As part of the plan of Territorial Arms to hinder Paxton Arms entrance into gear market. The constant improvement of Dog series were able to make it into quite useful unit but, still it never reached the performance of the Hunter/Jäger family.
A Scopedog is a typical early generation Heavy Gear, designed by people who did not really understand the potential of humanoid weapons system. And the technology used at the time had not been perfected yet. Over it's 115 cycle production period some thirty thousand Dog series gears were built, this averages down to 200 to 300 gear per cycle depending on demand.
Of the numerous Scopedog variant, should be mentioned atleast ATM-09-WR Marshydog for wet swamp and jungle environs, ATM-09-DT Desertdog a scopedog tailored for desert use, ATM-09-LC Light Scopedog.
