Dayren is the head chef for Bamboo Delta, one of the hippest restaurants in Bethany's core sextant. Known for its sleek décor and Mandanese fusion cuisine, Bamboo Delta has been getting rave reviews in the Bethanite food press ever since it opened a cycle ago. Dayren himself prefers to keep out of the spotlight, focusing on his culinary skills. The only thing he ever wanted to be was a chef, and he spent the last ten cycles working his way to this point in his career. At 30 cycles, he is young for a prominent chef.
Dayren has never worked outside of a restaurant. From working as a busboy, to waiting tables, to apprenticing himself to various chefs, to finally being head chef in Bamboo Delta, he has always worked in the restaurant industry. So far, he has not found any activity that brings him happiness besides cooking.
Most of his co-workers at Bamboo Delta are amazed by his commitment to his art; a dish never leaves the kitchen if it doesn't meet his standards. While cooking, he is completely absorbed in the act. Some of the Bamboo Delta staff is intimidated by his intensity, but they know he's the reason for the restaurant's success.
Few things besides cooking interest Dayren. If asked about it, he is usually at a loss to explain his passion. “I just like cooking," is his typical response. His devotion has resulted in few close relationships, with friends or lovers. Deep down, he craves social contact. Unfortunately he can't find a way to relate to most people.
His last girlfriend was Nell Shikari, a waitress in the Bamboo Delta. She was the first woman he truly loved, but it seemed to her like he loved cooking more. They broke up recently, and Nell left her job at the restaurant. The end of their relationship reinforced Dayren's suspicion that he truly doesn't understand other people.
The stereotypical overweight and jolly Bethanite chef doesn't describe Dayren, who is neither. He is fairly tall but thin. He has dark hair that he wears around shoulder length, depending on the last time he had a haircut, and is frequently unshaven. Long nights spent at the restaurant are reflected by the ever-present dark shadows under his eyes. Despite the fact that personal appearance is not particularly important to him, he is still strikingly handsome.
Dayren hasn't been in combat since he was a child, when playground bullies stole the lunches he had cooked himself. If attacked he would have no idea how to respond.
James Young (age 50; specialties: cooking and business), owner of the Bamboo Delta. James found Dayren working in another restaurant and recognized his genius, and offered him a position as head chef immediately.
Paul Curran (age 27; specialties: psychology), bartender at the Bamboo Delta. Paul is the closest friend Dayren has, although Dayren might not realize it. He is always encouraging Dayren to take cooking a little less seriously, and have more fun in life. In the past his advice has fallen on deaf ears, but gradually Dayren is starting to listen to his friend.
