Many HMMWV chassis are equpiied with add-on armor kits to improve their survivability. The need for "uparmored" HMMWVs was identified during peacekeeping missions in the Balkans, but the need increased dramatically during operations in Iraq. An "uparmored" M998 or M1038 has an AV of 5.
Purpose-built, fully armored HMMWVs such as the M1114 are described seperately.
