The RAH-66 Comanche was intended as a stealthy scout and light attack helicopter, to replace the OH-58 Kiowa series in U.S. Army service. The unexpected success of unmanned aerial vehicles in combat in the "War on Terror," as well as substantial delays and cost overruns, led to the project's cancellation in February of 2004.

The autocannon has a maximum capacity of 500 rounds, but 320 rounds was the "operational" load for this aircraft.

The Comanche's weapons bay was designed to carry various combinations of Hellfire and Stinger missiles, depending on its mission. Stub wings were also available to further increase the number of missiles carried, though other weapons may also be mounted.

The stats above represent a mixed multimission load; other loads are represented below:

  • Antitank: LAAC and 6 Hellfires in internal bay
  • Antiaircraft: LAAC and 12 Stingers in internal bay
  • External Antitank: Additional 6 Hellfires on stub wings
  • External Antiaircraft: Additional 8 Stingers on stub wings
